Kash Patel makes bold school shooting AI claim after '605 per cent increase' comment
FBI Director Kash Patel has stated the agency utilized AI to prevent half a dozen school shootings after boosting its deployment of the technology by 605 percent since assuming his role.
During an appearance on Fox News' Saturday in America, host Kayleigh McEnany questioned Patel regarding a statement he made in March, asserting the FBI had thwarted a school shooting in North Carolina following a 'tip' through AI software.
The FBI director informed McEnany: "We've done it in North Carolina and about half a dozen other states to prevent school shootings since I've been in the seat. AI, when used lawfully, is a critical tool to triage data. For far too long the institutional morass in DC rejected the advancements of technology."
Patel revealed that since leading the Bureau, he has "increased the use of AI in the FBI by 605 per cent".
"And what we're about to do is work with our private sector partners and look at databases and collect information and get DNA and then get these threats back out to the field and stop people from killing children at schools."
The director emphasized that the choice to integrate AI within the FBI was not a "political mission" and took aim at Democrats for failing to question him about the technology during his Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday.
Patel continued: "Of course, all the Democrats on the committee didn't want to talk about that, but we are going to continue the work of safeguarding our most precious resources, and children, and we're going to rely on technology.
"We have made the most technological advancements in the FBI's history during the last 18 months, thanks to President Trump."
The Fox News interview segment, which was posted to social media platform X, prompted social media users to share their opinions on the issue.
One person commented: "Why didn't he say the name of the school in North Carolina and the other schools where AI was used to prevent the mass shootings?
"Would certainly help to substantiate his claim. When you say you've done something but don't mention the who, what, where, how, and why, people go hmmm."
A second person chimed in: "In reality, the AI chat logs of potential school shooters were shared with the FBI, not that AI 'did' anything.
"Then why haven't these 'thwarts' been on local news? Doubt Kash even knows how to use a computer, let alone AI," joked another.
"He could have used common sense to fight for gun laws that the rest of the world, which don't have mass shootings, let alone school shootings, has. Us in the bigger world still get to go killing, just not children hiding under their desks at school," commented a fourth person.
