Meulensteen reveals Man Utd's biggest transfer mistake

Former Manchester United first-team coach Rene Meulensteen has revealed the club’s biggest mistake in the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils brought in a number of new players including Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Diego Leon.

United also signed Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens in a £18.2m deal.

It was thought that Lammens, 23, has been recruited to replace Andre Onana, who has been sent out on loan to Turkish club Trabzonspor.

But Ruben Amorim has declared that Altay Bayindir will continue as United’s No.1 goalkeeper despite a number of shaky performances.

Meulensteen feels United’s biggest mistake in the summer window was that the club did not bring in a more experienced goalkeeper.

United were linked to a number of experienced goalkeepers before they signed Lammens, including Gianluigi Donnarumma and Emiliano Martinez.

‘More than anything, they missed out on not bringing a goalkeeper in,’ Meulensteen told football betting site BetVictor.

‘What they’ve got now is that Andre Onana has gone because everybody wanted him gone, and Altay Bayindir is not good enough.

‘Senne Lammens is young, potentially a really good keeper, but you can’t just put him in the Premier League.

‘He made most of the saves, but that says a lot about the defence in front of him. He’s potentially a good keeper, don’t get me wrong.

‘Is he ready for the Premier League week in, week out? No, he’s not.

‘That’s one of the biggest issues where they failed, and that’s why I think United will still concede chances and goals because of that.’

Meulensteen is also adamant that United should’ve recruited a new centre-back.

‘Lisandro Martinez is constantly injured – Mathijis de Ligt, I think he’s not, in my opinion, as good as he has been,’ Meulensteen said.

‘I mentioned he was heavy, I didn’t mean overweight, but not mobile enough. There is still vulnerability there.’

Meulensteen believes United should consider a move for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi in January.

‘Marc Guehi would definitely bring some stability and good experience,’ Meulensteen added.
