Landon Donovan calls out US airline after 'worst travel experience' ever

United States soccer legend Landon Donovan appears to be feuding with an airline company in the middle of the 2026 World Cup.

Donovan was a fan favorite during his career, appearing in 157 games for the U.S. national team. His three goals in 2010 made him the highest-scoring men's player in America's World Cup history. Fans still remember his heroic goal against Algeria that helped the U.S. win its group.

Now, Donovan covers the World Cup for Fox Sports. He's been providing analysis on all 48 teams, not just the U.S. squad.

Travel troubles for Landon Donovan.

Prior to this Monday's slate of World Cup matches, Donovan put United Airlines on blast for producing the "worst travel experience" of his life.

"I’ve been traveling 100k miles/year since I was 16 and this was easily the worst travel experience of my life," Donovan wrote on X. "No transparency, no clarity and no respect for the passengers who were treated horribly all evening/morning. Absolutely shameful from @united."

The customer support team for United Airlines replied: "Hi Landon. We're sorry to hear this and want to take a look. When you can, please send us a DM with your confirmation number."

Well, that response from United only made the situation worse for Donovan.

"There will be no private DMs," the former L.A. Galaxy star said. "People want transparency and accountability so we’re going do this right here in public. You can start by apologizing to all impacted and then reimburse them all of their expenses with extra flight credit/money for the trouble caused."

We'll see if United can make this right with Donovan. If not, he'll flying with a different airline for the rest of the World Cup.
