Liverpool news: Decision made on Arne Slot future as owners break silence

The repercussions from Liverpool's loss to Manchester United on Sunday rumble on. The Reds' 3-2 defeat against their fierce adversaries represented their 11th league defeat this season and their 18th across all competitions. It marked another significant setback for the reigning Premier League champions in a year that's been littered with them.

Since the final whistle blew at Old Trafford, speculation surrounding Arne Slot's future has intensified once more, despite Liverpool remaining in contention for a top-five finish this season. In a rare interview, John W. Henry, the principal figure at Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the American sports conglomerate that owns Liverpool, has discussed his aspirations for the club. His revealing comments arrive as Slot's Liverpool future appears to have been determined on Merseyside.

John Henry breaks silence

Liverpool's principal owner has stated that FSG will not "settle for mediocrity" amidst the club's present difficulties. FSG acquired Liverpool in 2010 when the club were in disarray and have transformed them into a two-time Premier League-winning outfit in the years that followed.

FSG are also the custodians of Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox. They generated controversy last week by dismissing Red Sox manager Alex Cora and members of the backroom staff earlier in the season.

In an interview with Sports Business Journal, Henry, 76, broke his silence on the dismissals, offering Liverpool supporters a glimpse into FSG's thinking.

"Fans get frustrated," said Henry. "The Sox looked terrible for (their) first 25 games. I remember a plane flying overhead when we (Liverpool) were beating Manchester United 7-0 (in 2023) that read 'FSG OUT! It doesn't mean you ignore them, it means you work harder - you don't settle for mediocrity. You have to win."

Arne Slot's future becomes clear

Despite Henry's remarks and his group's recent interventions at the Red Sox, Slot is expected to remain at Liverpool despite mounting pressure and attention from Dutch giants Ajax.

According to reports in the Dutch media, the Eredivisie outfit were exploring a potential move for Slot as they search for a permanent successor to Fred Grim, who left the club in February.

However, Slot plans to see out his contract on Merseyside until 2027. Earlier reports have indicated that Anfield bosses are determined to back the 47-year-old and will afford him the opportunity to reverse the club's fortunes.

Reactions to Slot have been mixed, with former Liverpool star Didi Hamann believing Liverpool's head coach warrants additional time. "I've heard that Arne Slot will be there next season," the former Germany midfielder said.

"I think there's a case to be made that maybe a change of manager should happen or should have happened... He won the league last season of course so I think it's a decision I can live with, and I think most fans can live with, if they have a decent finish to the season."

However, former England striker Gary Lineker believes ex-Anfield hero Xabi Alonso could be poised to take the reins this summer.

"Would Slot be there next season? Eleven defeats in the Premier League, still in the Champions League positions," he remarked on The Rest is Football podcast. "I wouldn't be surprised if Xabi Alonso was there next season."
